Hello, I’m Jenifer, but you can call me Je, Jen, or Jenny. I’m so glad you found your way here.
I’m the founder of The Empath Advisor, and I’ve spent over 16 years immersed in high-level academic environments, collaborating with top scientists, publishing in leading journals, mentoring early-career researchers, and helping secure multimillion-dollar funding. But here’s what I’ve seen time and again:
Being brilliant at research isn’t enough.
To succeed, you also need to know how to communicate your work powerfully, present yourself with confidence, and make smart, strategic career moves.
I’ve been through the overwhelm, the imposter syndrome, the pressure to always do more.
I know what it’s like to feel lost in a system that rarely teaches you how to truly own your voice and direction. That’s why I created The Empath Advisor.
My mission is simple:
To share the tools, strategies, and mindset shifts that can make your academic life more intentional, less exhausting, and ultimately more fulfilling. I believe you deserve a career that reflects not just your talent, but your values, your voice, and your vision.
It’s guidance from someone who’s lived it, studied it, and now helps others move through it with purpose.
Let’s build your legacy, on your terms!

“Working with Jenifer in the early stages of my PhD projects was the best decision and has greatly shaped the researcher I currently am and played a key role in all my achievements to date. Jenifer helped me write my first (and second) manuscripts that went on to be accepted in high-ranking journals. She taught about scientific writing, how to compellingly and cohesively tell the story of my research, how to make high quality schematics that complement the story. Not only scientific writing, but she taught me how to manage my time, plan experiments and set boundaries - all of which allowed me to thrive in research and use my time productively. She helped me come up with strategies to work through times of high stress and pressure and helped give me the skills to cope with the high intensity nature of science. Furthermore, she did this was unwavering kindness, patience and empathy, never once making me feel under-qualified or silly for not having the answer.
Working with Jenifer was one of the most transformative experiences of my career to date and I attribute many of my successes to the skills I gained under her tutelage.”

“I had the opportunity to act as Jenifer Pendiuk Gonçalves supervisor for almost 10 years. During this period I could closely observe her scientific and personal development. From the scientific point of view she could perfectly understand the meaning and the importance of a project, executing it the best way possible. Very skilled in laboratory taks, she was always able to deal with any adversity during its execution trying to balance what was possible and impossible to reach. Her work ethics is impeccable, as well as everything that she produced. She is one of the most talented students that I supervised. From the personal side, she is very calm, centered, and resilient, qualities that are essential in this field. She was able to guide and supervise other students very effectively, reflecting her leading skills. When I heard about this project of hers I could not be happier to see that she might help others to achieve their goals following a smoothier pathway by sharing all the knowledge she acquired/improved during her own pathway! Therefore I recommend her with all my enthusiasm!”

“You had a profound impact on my education, being a great influence on both my technical and personal development. You taught me how to plan experiments, search for innovative ideas, always encouraging me to think of solutions for scientific challenges, and, most importantly, to be ethical and professional in all my actions. You have always been an example of excellence, and many times, I jokingly said that when I "grew up," I wanted to be like you. Your dedication and expertise are truly inspiring.
One of the greatest challenges I faced in my career was writing papers and presenting in front of large audiences – I really struggled with it (it was a real torture!). But throughout it all, you always found time to help, guide, and support me at every step. Even when I had to present 50 times in a row to overcome my fear, you were there, patiently watching each one of them and giving me great suggestions. Your dedication and patience were crucial in helping me overcome these challenges. You not only helped me face the difficulties of academic life but also provided me with a solid foundation that gave me the confidence to move forward, especially in the field of cell culture.
Today, I have my own company focused on the development of 3D models using cell culture, and I have no doubt that much of my success is due to the positive influence and learning I gained from working with you. You were not only an exemplary mentor but also a friend and a constant source of inspiration for my professional growth. I am deeply grateful for everything I learned from you. Thank you so much.”

“Jenifer was my supervisor for my Honours project. When I first approached her, she was very friendly and welcoming. She was also very patient with me knowing that it was my first time being the a laboratory environment altogether. She took the time to guide me through the thought process of a researcher - appropriate controls, technical replicates, and results analysis etc. During our year together, she also helped me hone my writing skills, giving me advice to improve my scientific writing - a skill that is very different from when utilised in the classroom.
On deeper level, Jenifer encouraged me a lot, and shaped me into the researcher I am today. When I would feel discouraged or unsure of my capabilities, Jenifer would always be there with advice as well as reassurance. If given the chance, I would love to work with Jenifer again, I know I have so much more to learn from her!”

“Jenifer was my first mentor and the person who introduced me more closely to a scientific career. From our very first interactions, her patience and clarity in dealing with a student who had just started their undergraduate studies made a strong impression on me. I quickly realized she was someone I should lean on, whether for writing, thinking through experiments, seeking guidance in tough moments, making professional decisions, or learning how to handle everyday challenges in the lab.
Over the years I worked alongside her, I always looked up to the way she thought and acted in the lab. And even though I don’t have a tenth of her patience and self-control, I believe I’ve inherited much of her intangible ethics and dedication to quality work. I owe a significant part of my critical thinking development to her, as well as my ability today to teach others, and for that, I will be forever grateful.”
-
“What truly sets Jen apart is her unwavering dedication to others. She has always been keen to help students and colleagues, taking the time to listen, provide thoughtful guidance, and offer practical solutions. Her ability to mentor, problem-solve, and create a positive and collaborative work environment is unmatched. Jen’s work ethic is second to none - she is proactive, highly skilled, and approaches every challenge with a solutions-driven mindset. Beyond her expertise, she is a wonderful person to work with - approachable, empathetic, and genuinely invested in the success of those around her. I can’t think of a better person to help navigate the challenging world of research. Anyone who has the opportunity to work with Jen is truly in great hands!”

Global perspective and adaptability
Having worked in Brazil, Germany, Portugal, and Australia, I understand the challenges of navigating different academic systems and cultural expectations. I’ve successfully collaborated with scientists from diverse backgrounds and helped researchers achieve their goals and position themselves internationally for better opportunities.
Innovative approach to science and education
At The University of Queensland (Australia), I co-led the redesign of part of the biotechnology curriculum, introducing real-world, challenge-based learning that significantly improved student engagement. I’ve also developed innovative research strategies, including pioneering studies on extracellular vesicles and the intrinsic antitumor effects of nanomaterials.
My approach blends innovative thinking with practical solutions, ensuring real results.
Empathetic and results-driven support
I get it, academia is intense. I’ve lived the pressure of deadlines, imposter syndrome, and trying to balance research, teaching, and personal life. That’s exactly why I created The Empath Advisor. My mission is to offer practical and strategic guidance that helps you work smarter, not harder, so you can:
Achieve sustainable success without sacrificing your well-being.
I’m also a human being.
When I’m not helping researchers find their voice, you’ll probably catch me doing absolutely nothing… and really enjoying it.
I find joy in the quiet things: a good pasta, a happy basil plant, a deep chat about the mysteries of life. I’m into mystical weirdness (from astrology to parallel realities), love trying new foods, and keep collecting half-read books.
I don’t remember dates, but I record how people make me feel. I’ve always loved spotting patterns and solving problems, which is lucky, because that turned into my job.
I’m calm, not easily stressed, and usually see the glass half full (even when life gets messy). Travel excites me, and home grounds me. A cozy bed, a comfy soup, and my electric socks are how I recharge!
